as soon as they find further accommodation for their establish- -ment necessary. From the position of this lot it is immaterial to the Government if the reclamation is not made.

5.

Regarding the prayer of the petitioners for the extension to 999 years of the leases of the properties referred to, I would observe that the application is probably based upon the fact that the lease of the entire area now comprised in Marine Lot No. 2, the property of Messrs. Butterfield and Swire and used in connection with what is known as the Taikoo Shipyard, has been extended to 999 years under the authority of the Despatches noted in the margin.

.60.93 acres.

A small portion of M.L.2, as shown on the plan, was in- -corporated with M.L.1 on which stands Messrs. Butterfi- -el and Swire's Sugar Refinery.

The "additional area included in Reclamation is ex-

-plained by the fact that Messrs. Butterfield and Swire in carrying out the Reclamation found it necessary on

oo count of alterations in their scheme to extend the

line of reclamation further seawards than was originally

contemplated. The area is in excess of that sold at

public auction.

The original Q.B.M.L.2 was sold in May in 1891 on a 999 years

lease. The whole of the other areas included in the present

Q.B.M.L. No. 2 amounting to 43.41 acres were sold or granted in

1900 on 99 years leases renewable for one further term of 99 years.

These leases have been extended to 999 years leases without fine.
